About Mechanical Department
 
The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in the year 1979 at the time of inception of CBIT with an initial intake of 60 students and an additional section of 60 is added in 2012 . The department also officering  B.E. Production Engineering from 1984 with an intake of 60 students. The department is also offering two Post Graduate Programmes, M.E. with specialization in CAD/CAM with an intake of 25 students since 2002 and M.E Thermal Engineering with an intake of 18 in the year 2012.

 
The department has 40 eminent faculty supported by 23 Technical Staff that fetched sponsored research projects from AICTE, UGC, BHEL, DRDL, NSTL to a tune of Rs. 1.5 Crores and consultancy of worth Rs. 25 lakhs from Recardo Enginis, Leer Inc., General Motors, Daimer Chrysler, Jhonson Control Inc., RR Industries, Tecumseh Pvt Ltd., ITW Singode, Usha Fans, KPCL, Praga Tools, ACD Communications, ICOMM Tele Services etc. In addition to research and consultancy the department has organized a number of ISTE/UGC/SDPs sponsored and self financed courses for faculty and industrial personnel in various emerging areas, viz. ISTE sponsored Numerical Methods (1994 and 1996), AICTE Sponsored Computer Aided Design and Analysis (1999), AICTE Sponsored Finite Element Analysis in Metal Forming (2003),UGC sponsored Advanced Production Systems(2004), ISTE Sponsored Refrigeration & Air Conditioning (2004). AICTE sponsored SDP on "Recent Advances in Manufacturing Automation and Simulation" (RAMAS-2012) during 7th to 19th May 2012. The faculty of the department  published papers over 202 in International Journals , 130 in National Journals, 121 in International Conferences and 220 in National Conferences so far. However for the last 5 years the faculty of the department has published 142 research papers in international journals, 122 in national journals, 72 in international conferences and 60 in national conferences. The department was organized an International Conference on Computational Methods in Engineering and Science in 2009 and a National Conference on Advances in Mechanical and Renewable Energy (AMERE-13) 25th -26th March 2013. 10 Ph.Ds were awarded under the guidance of the faculty of the department, 6 were submitted and another 40 are in progress.
 
The department has well equipped laboratories with research facilities viz., a Denford (UK) make 8-Sation Vertical Machining Centre, a CNC lathe and Mill, and a 5-axis robot (FANUC make), load cells interfaced to computer to measure forces in metal forming and metal cutting operations,  NOx  Analyzer and AVL smoke meter etc, and software like AUTOCAD, ANSYS, SOLID WORKS,HYPER MESH,CATIA,DEFORM-2D and LS-DYNA, FLUENT, ICEM,VPG, Dytron etc.
 
Many eminent personalities having expertise in their respective fields worked in the department over the years. To name few are Dr.V.Kamala, Dr.P.Narasimha Reddy, Dr.B.Prabhakar Reddy, Dr.C.M.Varaprasad, Dr.T.A.Janardhan Reddy, Prof K.Sitaram, Prof. Ch.Lakshman Rao and Dr.P.Jayapal Reddy. Dr.P.Ravinder Reddy is the Head of the Department since Aug 2008.

With an innovative and inquisitive Dr P. Ravinder Reddy, contributed a lot for research and innovative learning. He published over 175 technical and research papers in various international and national journals and conferences. He has guided 10 Ph.Ds  (7 awarded and 5 submitted), over 200 M.E/M.Tech projects, 250 B.Tech/B.E projects in various fields of engineering and sciences. The fields  of 10 Ph.Ds  includes  (i) Dynamic study of Resistance Welding in the fabrication of Nuclear Fuel Pins Awarded by JNTU, Hyderabad on 28th  August 2009, (ii) Impact Testing of Advanced Ceramic Composites Using Experimental and F.E. Analysis, Awarded On 23rd Dec.2010 by JNTUH, Hyderabad (iii) Experimental and Numerical Investigations on the Friction Welding Process, Awarded On 1st  November 2011, By JNTUH, Hyderabad., (iv) Characterization and Simulation of Deep Drawing Process through Finite Element Analysis, Awarded On 4th  February 2012, By JNTUH, Hyderabad (v) Investigations on Synthesis and Characterization of Nanoceramic Composites and Simulation Studies on Modeling and Analysis of Single and Multi Walled Carbon Nanotubes, Awarded On 9th  March 2012, By JNTUH, Hyderabad (vi) PSD analysis of Hermetic Compressor using FEA,  Awarded On 6th  February 2013, by OU, Hyderabad., (vii) Machinability on Metal Matrix Composites using experimental and numerical techniques, Awarded On 11th  March 2013, by OU, Hyderabad., (viii) Studies on Fracture behavior and strength Characteristics of Carbon Epoxy & CNT Composite Materials, JNTU, Hyderabad Submitted in 2011, (ix) FEA Based Modeling of Magneto Rheological Damper to Control Vibrations During Machining, JNTU, Hyderabad , submitted Aug. 2012, (x) The Effect of process parameters on steel welding response in curved structures using finite element analysis, JNTU Hyderabad  in 2012.


As a facilitator for the learning process organized 23 STTPs/workshops/FDPs/SDPs, 2 international conferences beneficial to Faculty, Researchers and Industry and delivered 86 keynote and invited talks. Was a chief and principal investigator for 13 research and 27 industrial consultancy projects sponsored by AICTE.UGC,NSTL, DRDL, BHEL, RR Industries, ICOMM Tele services and ACD communications.

He is a recipient of Bronze medal from “Mathematical Olympiad”(1983), “UGC Fellowship” award by UGC (1999), best teacher award by CHAITANYA BHARATHI INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY during the academic year 1998-1999, Raja Rambapu Patil National award for promising Engineering Teacher by ISTE for the year 2000 in recognition of his outstanding contribution in the area of Engineering and Technology, Excellence “A” Grade awarded by AICTE monitoring committee (2003) for the MODROB project sponsored by AICTE, “Engineer of the year Award-2004” for his outstanding contribution in Academics and research by the Govt. of Andhra Pradesh and Institution of Engineers (India), AP State Centre on 15th September 2004 on the occasion of 37th Engineer’s Day, Distinguished Alumnus award - 2006 during Silver jubilee celebrations of KITS Warangal, AP. The Biography  is included in Marquis Who's Who in the World-2007 during Aug.2007. Best Technical Paper Award in the year Dec. 2008 in Industrial Application titled “Online quality monitoring welding &weld upset in resistance projection welding process”, in Journal of Non-Destructive Testing &Evaluation, the official journal of ISNT during the year 2007 by National Governing Council of Indian Society for Non Destructive Testing.
